Starting A Travel Blog – For Borneo Travelling and More

The Borneo Wanderers

Share the Charming Beauty of Borneo

Hi guys, I have just started a travel blog alongside my wife.

The brand new site is called as the Borneo Wanderers.

We are a couple from Borneo and we just love to travel. We have been travelling to quite a few places in Borneo and we are keen to share our adventure and travelling tips.

So we figure that, there is no better way of sharing than starting a blog 😉

I  See Opportunity

I have to admit that we are not the first to blog our beloved Borneo.Opportunity Knocks

In fact, there are already quite a number of similar blogs already.

However, I as an avid internet marketer sees a big opportunity for me as well.

What opportunity that I see?

Well, I noticed that most of the blogs are just merely hobby blogs without any intention or maybe no knowledge on how to monetize their blogs.

Most are done by hobbyist or casual travel enthusiast.

At best, a few blogs may have some Google Adsense or selling local souvenirs.

Therefore, this is my opportunity to start an authority blog on travelling tips in Borneo, with the possibility of monetizing the blog by applying online and offline marketing strategies.

How to Make Money Travel Blogging – My Strategies

Blogging for money

I have a few ideas and strategies that I would like to apply on how I can monetize my travel blog.

For this first few months, I will only use advertisements and other revenue streams sparingly.

I would need to first build an audience, followers, or fans to our travel website.

My readers will be my top priority and finding the right balance is key to any blog success.

However, over time I need to be able to eventually make some income through my blog for me to be able to continue to fund our journey, adventure, and reviews.

So here it is, my strategies on how I am going to generate income through my website.

  1.  Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate marketing is one of the best ways to make money when blogging and can create passive income stream.

So what is affiliate marketing? It is basically a performance-based marketing where a business rewards their affiliate – e.g. your website – each time you help to make a sale for them. In other words, you will earn a commission each time you help to sell products or services through your website.

Nevertheless, I am not about to bombard a slew of affiliate links to my blog suddenly.

I will only choose products that my audience may be interested in, and of course, I believe in.

Best affiliate programs to start with

There are many affiliate partners that you can choose from. There are affiliate partners for virtually every niche.

Below are some of the most popular affiliate programs that you can choose:

Amazon Associates: This is the most popular and successful affiliate program by far. This is also one of the best place to start your affiliate marketing venture because Amazon practically sells just about everything.

E-Junkie: This site is really good for those who are into eBooks. The commission on eBooks are excellent, up to 50%.

Affiliate Window and CJ Affiliate by Conversant: A great choice because they offer wide range of agencies and advertisers.

  1. Pay-per-click (PPC) advertising

This is a very popular way of earning some extra through a website.

The most popular PPC advertiser, also known as cost-per-click (CPC), by far is Google Adsense.

I may have to wait for my blog to mature for six months before my blog will be allowed to put Adsense on it.

  1. Pay-per-view (PPV) advertising

Also known a cost-per-mille advertising (CPM), PPV is pretty similar to CPC. The difference is that payment is only paid for every 1,000 views, not per click. Earning average is about $1-2 per 1000 views.

For PPV, I can use either Yieldselect or Tribal Fusion.

  1. Direct advertising

As my travel blog grows in popularity and traffics (hopefully), direct advertising is something that I would like to do.

I can offer banner space or text links directly to my would-be advertisers at an agreed fee.

  1. Sponsored posts

A sponsored post is where advertisers send you a completed post, including a link to their company website. Being able to attract more readers is essential to woo advertisers to do a sponsored post with your website.

  1. Product reviews

I intend to write paid reviews on products that may be of interest to my readers, provided that it fits my niche of course. Of course, it is important to disclose such posts to my to-be readers. Writing an honest review is really important, so that not compromise the trust of your readers.

  1. Create and sell my own products or services

Write an eBook: Once I have enough experience and materials, I would like to write an eBook and sell it as a way to monetize my blog. I can sell my eBook on my website, E-Junkie, Amazon, or the Apple Store. Once written, I will update at least once a year, and keep the content quality high.

Travel Agent Service: This is something that I will consider in the near future. I don’t have to be the one doing the tour guide as I can collaborate with other travel agents for this.

  1. Consulting and coaching

Once I have the necessary experience and expertise as a travel blogger, I might just start a consulting service. For this to materialize, it is important that I know my chosen field inside and out, and preferably become a well-known authority in my chosen niche. Trust, reputation, and recognition is best earned before I can go in this direction.

Monetization is by one-on-one coaching for an hourly rate to help clients reach their goals.

  1. Promotion Through Social Media

This is something that is really important in today’s day and age.

Social media can be a great way to build audience, followers, and fans.

The more people follow you, the more influential you can become.

I will be setting-up a Facebook page specifically for our travel website and I am still considering if I should use my own twitter account or set-up a new twitter account for our new website.

Make money using Facebook and Twitter

Though I have yet to experience it yet, I know for a fact that companies do pay you to tweet or share post on some of the successful bloggers who have a large following.

My Hope & Parting thoughts

This new travel blog of ours is so very new.

There is hardly any content in it yet, as I am managing a couple of sites and on top of that I am still working full time with my job.

Nevertheless, I hope that with my wife help, we can build this new travel blog of ours, gradually and patiently. I am very much aware that there is a lot work to be done and implement. I can’t possibly implement all the  monetization methods that I mentioned above at the same time.

The most important however is quality content. All those  monetization methods would mean nothing if I can’t come up without quality content for my new travel website.

I will try to update on the progress of my new travel website on rattacebuster.com time by time  and share my experience, and knowledge gained along the way.

I would like to thank Wealthy Affiliate for showing me the proper ways to do online business and also providing me all the internet marketing tools that I needed to prepare for success on my online journey.

Thank you taking time to read my post everyone.

If you would like to share your ideas on making money blogging, or anything at all, just drop a comment below.

Until then, cheers guys!

I have heard wonderful things about your country, yet to be able to follow your blog and see your country through your eyes will be a wonderful experience of sharing your incredible journey!
I look forward to following your journey! 🙂
Blessings to you and your wife as you travel,
    Christa 🙂

    • Hi Christa! Thank you for stopping by my site. I am very happy to know that you have heard good things about our place. I truly love Boneo as we have lots of natural wonders and places of interest. It is my hope that I can share all these through my travel blog. Blessing to you as well. 🙂

  2. I have some great memories of my travels, years ago, to Borneo. First of all, what a delightful part of the world. I was able to meet a few Orangutans in the wild…absolutely amazing human-like creatures. I also enjoyed straddling the equator with on foot in the southern hemisphere and the other in the northern hemisphere. An then there is the coffee…best in the world.

    • Hi Mike, I can see that you really enjoyed your travel in Borneo years ago. That is one of my reason of opening a travel blog specifically for Borneo as I would like to share the beauty and wonders of Borneo. I hope many more people will get to read about my place and better still, to come here and experience themselves the many attractions of that we have to offer.

  3. Nice site! This is the very same thing I am implementing with my site! Although I haven’t been around very long, I see your content is extremely well thought out and this is a great platform for informing others.I didn’t know about the alternative PPV sites and I will definitely check them out! Cheers!

    • Hi Jason, thanks a lot for the comment. Are you interested in travel blogging as well? I must say that travel blogging is good fun but making money probably requires a bit more work. It is easy but it can be done. I don’t intend to make money first for travel blog for now. I need more content and create more authority first. From there I will gradually implement my money making strategies 🙂
