What is a rat race?

According to Wikipedia, “a rat race is an endless, self-defeating, or pointless pursuit.”

The rat race invokes the image of a mouse running around helplessly in a  never ending maze or spinning wheel.

The Rat Race in Real Life

I love how you covered the negative physical and mental effects the day to day grind cause in most anyone.
I escaped when I “Uncovered the Secrets to Making Money Online” just like it says top right.
Thanks for the inspirational guidance, my best,

    • Thank you Gary! You are certainly lucky to finally say goodbye to the rat race. I certainly hope that my time is near as well. Wealthy Affiliate is a blessing for me and I will work hard to learn and apply all the secrets to making money online 🙂

  6. Hi Dominic – You make a very good argument about getting out of the rat race in your post. i also like the way you have given a solution to the problem.
    Good work

    • Thanks Mark, really appreciate your thought. As a person who is in a rat race myself, I feel the need to share my experience and possible solutions that can be done to tackle the problem.

  7. Ugh, the rat race. I was trapped in the rat race for years, and I guess I still am, in some ways. You do a great job of describing it. I agree with you that Wealthy Affiliate is a great way to get out of the rat race and start doing what you love, when you want to do it.

    • Thank you Stephanie. We know that we are in a rat race when we are not happy at our job, has no sense of purpose and work-life balance is almost non-existence. Wealthy Affiliate is our ticket to escape the rat race forever!

  8. What a great article! When you put it that way…life is just like being in a rat race. It’s almost like reading about a bunch of automatons, with no capability of independent thought. We’re programmed to follow a certain course, and most don’t veer from it. I say it’s time to hop off that wheel, take stock, re-evaluate, and have a great life. Creating your own wealth, rather than relying on others for your income is certainly the way to start. Thanks!

    • Hi Hindy, oh my you are actually picturing the rat race in a more descriptive manner than me lol! Anyway, wow that statement by you is really powerful and can actually sent shivers to those reading. Like you mentioned, it is time for us to get into our own great life and make a start to leave our sorry rat race dilemma. Thanks for stopping Hindy and God bless :-

  9. “The best time to start was 20 years ago. The second best time to start is today!” So very true 🙂 I was in a 9 – 5 job that I actually really enjoyed. I loved my co-workers and the job itself was very rewarding. Sunday nights didn’t bother me because Monday mornings didn’t either. Then it became a chore. ‘The Bosses’ stopped our (well deserved) bonuses and cut down on other simple perks. We felt unappreciated. Unrealistic demands were being made etc etc etc. It became extremely stressful for us all, and for our families. I was already working on building up my own t-shirt printing business from home as a bit of a hobby. But all the cr*p in work made me realise that the time to get out was now. I haven’t looked back. Great, motivational article 🙂

    • Hi Jyl, great you like that quote hehe 🙂 Wow, I can see that you have already quit your full time job and now doing your business. Good for you and I hope you are doing great. Yeah, you are right, just like you, I have great colleagues to work with, but after almost 5 years, my work pretty much feel like a chore and I am itching to do something different or at least working on something that I like to do. I have negotiated with the company that I work with to do just part time there and luckily they approve my application. In 2 months, I’ll be working half day in a different department and I hope start my part time freelance business in earnest. Thanks for commenting Jyl.

  10. Hi Dominic.
The worst part of being on the rat race is that you hardly realize you are running it. I was lucky enough to escape from it some 20 years ago by starting my own business and I love to see posts like yours aiming to help others to do the same. It does feels good to help others, don’t you think so?

    • Hi Oscar, oh yes, there is no better feeling than to be able to help people who are in need. This site is focused on helping people to escape the rat race through legitimate online ventures and also sometimes warning people the many online scams around 🙂

  11. You are so right my friend. Working for someone else is something I got tired of doing. Working all day every day for someone else’s benefit finally took it’s toll on me and I decided to do something about. It took 5 years but I finally quit the rat race. It’s more satisfying knowing that all the work I’m doing now is for family’s benefit.

    • Wow, this is really great to hear Andres. It may take you 5 years to finally quit the rat race, but I believed, it is all worth it for you. Congratulations and I hope you continue to strive for the best for your family :-

  12. I think that everyone has started with the rat race even the billionaires that you get today. My formula is to build my own passive income streams that will make money for me while I sleep.

I also red the book “Rich dad poor dad” by Robert Kiyosaki and I guess it was there where I first heard of the phrase “the rat race”.

I also see that you are referring Wealthy Affiliate which is a great choice for anyone looking to get out of the rat race.

    • Hi Viljoen, can’t agree with you more. The book “Rich Dad Poor Dad” by Robert Kiyosaki is also one of my favourite book of all time. You are right as well, Wealthy Affiliate is the impetus for me to escape the rat race by learning the ropes on online business and marketing 🙂

  13. Wow. What a powerful article.

I quit my job 3 years ago and started working for myself. I can’t tell you how amazing and free I feel not being a slave to someone else.

I think it’s so stupid to spend your whole life building something for someone else when you could be doing the same thing for yourself.

    • Well done Jay, I am happy to know that you are now working for yourself for 3 years now without a fussy boss other than yourself hehe.

I’m on my way to become my own boss too. Wish me luck, Jay 🙂

  14. Wow this is perfect for me, been jumping to and from crumby jobs for the good part of a decade now, this is something I can get into, working from home online would be a dream for me at the moment! The rat race has to be left in the past!

    • Hi dezenn, I am stoked that you have something that can help you to work from home online! All the best and I really hope that you will eventually be able to get out from the rat race 🙂

  15. I have heard about the rat race all my life but never thought it could be this devastating! Thanks for this post, it’s very helpful in highlighting what a rat race is, how you know you are in one, the out come of a rat race and a way out. I will be checking out for info on your site. Keep up the good work

    • Hi Juliet, yeah, it can be very miserable indeed if you realized that you are in a never ending cycle of the rat race. The sad thing is that, they are many people that still and may never realize that they are in a this vicious cycle. They think that it is a normal because many are doing the same thing. One will only realize this madness when something happens in their personal life, such as death in family, feeling like they are going nowhere in life, or when they started to question their goals and meaning in life. Nobody wants to work like a robot their whole life 🙂

  16. I am feeling a rat race in my life;since this one applies to me ‘You have no motivation to go to work every day and is hard pressed for any inspiration’ and of course this one You hardly have any free time for your hobby and spending quality time with family is proving to be a challenge for you.
So how can we prevent a rat race/

    • Hi Divican, so you were asking on how do we prevent a rat race, right? Well, I think it all depends if we are already in that situation or not. If you are already in one, well, you got to make steps to toward escaping the dreaded rat race. I think that is the situation that you are in now, as far as I can understand from your comment here. Maybe you can try and find a second job, or looking for ways to earn extra income from home.

You are not in a rat race if you are not in constant search for better pay, better income, not stuck in a dead end job etc.. Examples are students studying college or those who are working for themselves or have their own business. To prevent from being sucked into the rat race dilemma, one must plan and take action early. One of it is by learning the ropes on how online marketing works. By learning to leverage the power of the internet, earning a good income online, one will have the chance to escape the rat race misery for good.

And you know what, my No.1 Rated Online Marketing Training Program provides me with all the blueprint that I need.

  17. Hello!
Enjoyed your article on the rat race. It turns out that I suffer from some of the physical and emotional conditions you listed. Thank you for providing those details and a solution. It’s very informative and nice connection. Looking forward to reading more of your post in the future.

    All the best,

    • Hi Amanda, well, some symptom of burning out has already surfaced. You need a way out or escape from all this stress. Hope my information here can help in some way for you :-

  18. Nice site – I really agree with you. This whole rat race is awful – people are getting sick from it. It really feels debilitating – like is there any real progress with it? I feel sad so many people feel trapped because they also have families, and obligations and it’s a tough road. I think it’s important to help people know the proper resources to get going learning something else – but without getting scammed of course.

    • Thanks Maria 🙂 It is all about taking action and doing something with our situation. As for me, learning the proper way to do online marketing with Wealthy Affiliate is one of the best decision that I’ve ever made in my life.

  19. Hi there! I really like your website. How I wish I could escape the rat race, but you need to play their rules and play smart.

Working for other people is not the best path to achieve financial freedom. I agree, people need to get out of their comfort zones and look for multiple income streams, especially the ones that provides residual income.

Building an online business these days is an opportunity open for anybody. It takes time and hard work, but every effort is worth it!

Your recommended training is really impressive! thanks for sharing!

    • Hi Stefan, I understand your point of view. You are right, we got to be smart and know the rules of the game. It is not too wise to suddenly quit our job without any plan or backup. It doesn’t have to be that way. We start our venture part time first, developing multiple streams of income outside of our working hours i.e. At night and on the weekend. For me personally, I started out first by educating myself through Wealthy Affiliate and gradually implementing what I have learned. I have already generated some good income now from what I have learned and hopefully I will keep on improving until the day comes for me to be finally able to resign from my job 🙂

  20. Man I read this post and it really resonated with me because I am also in the process of setting up my online business so that I too can escape the rat race and prison of my cubicle that I report to from 9 to 5 every day. That really is no way to live life, especially when there is so much out there to explore!

It sucks, and I’m glad there are people out there that feel the same way that I do. Life is too short to not go after what you want. So DLansing I wish you all the best brother, because I will definitely be in the exact same position as you, with us both being able to quit our full time jobs and pursue our passions full time!

As far as your site design goes, I really liked your logo, as well as the images you used. I think they were very relevant and entertaining, especially the one with Fry from Futurama.

all the best, looking forward to reading more from you in the future!

    • Hi Alec, great to hear that somebody has resonated with my post on how to escape the dreaded rat race. The process is not easy but it is well worth it. All the experience and challenges that you and I face, will only make us stronger. Keep up your effort to get out the rat race my friend and all the best in your online marketing journey too.

  21. Thank you for sharing this article with us Dominic. The more places where people can read about this, the better. A huge percent of society just conform themselves and can’t look further from their daily boring, frustrating, sometimes even near inhuman jobs. We were NOT born to be slaves. We are NOT in this planet to keep repeating this cycle. Take the first step NOW, you can do it, be free!

    • Thank you very much for your inspiring comment and feedback too Mike!

  22. Very interesting post on how the stressful “rat race lifestyle” can be detrimental to your health. I believe that taking action and learning how to make an income from home is a very powerful thing for those that are fed up with the 9 to 5 lifestyle. If an office job is not for you, why not start taking action to change your lifestyle? Wealthy Affiliate is indeed one of the best programs out there to make this change happen! Congrats on a great site!

    • Thanks a lot Cole, ACTION is what’s needed just like you said. It doesn’t have to be sudden, like quitting your job or start a business from scratch without any backup. That is not smart at all. We should always start from somewhere. And if you are looking or considering online marketing, Wealthy Affiliate is indeed the best place to start 🙂

  23. I’m reminded of a quote that goes something like this, “The problem with the rat race is even if you win, you’re still a rat.”

I abandoned the rat race about 30 years ago when I left a stressful job and a loveless marriage. I’m now nearly 60 and I see how the rat race has damaged or destroyed other men my age who never escaped.

They are strangers to themselves without a clue who they are or how to live.

When I was in the Army, I was trained that if I ever became a prisoner of war, it was my duty to escape. I think it is our duty as humans trapped in the rat race to escape too. Your cage is not your home!

I truly appreciate your introduction to a legitimate online business strategy. Freeing people from the rat race is a noble cause.

    • Great quote Gary, I love that one!

You know, I’m really amaze to hear that you have gone out of the rat race 30 years ago. Respect my friend!

I can understand on why people are stuck with the never ending wheels of the rat race. There could be many reasons to it, from keeping up to the Joneses, paying huge debt, lack of personal financial knowledge etc.

I for myself, haven’t really fully out of this race but I really believe that that I’m on my way to leaving this race since joining Wealthy Affiliate as my online business venture getting more steadier by the month. It also helps if we can find meaning, joy, and satisfaction in the things that we do.

Thank you very much for your comment in my humble post Gary 🙂

  24. Yes this is a really good post and I imagine alot of people can relate to this. You are right about so many things here. When you dont enjoy Monday and Friday cannot come quick enough. You really have to decide to change. Who wants to get the end of their life and all you have done is worked and paid bills. Defintiely not me but it starts with a decision to stop this insanity and to get looking for ways to change it. Good article!
    Cheers, Sharon

    • Thank you very much for your feedback Sharon. So true as you said, if Monday to Friday is awful for you, then it is time to reconsider what are you currently doing and plan on how you can change your life, cheers!
